Four-Decade Journey from Neural Somatic Integration to Green Touch Bodywork
"Awaken the innate wisdom protected within your body, and its implicit need for an empathetic connection."
*For over four decades, I've been on an unwavering commitment to the world of bodywork therapy, starting
my journey in 1973. My profound journey has led me to wear various hats – I've been a devoted father, a diligent student, a dedicated practitioner, and a seasoned teacher. The heart of this transformative journey is the
enriching environment of the Esalen® Institute, where I immersed myself for 25 years in the picturesque
setting of Big Sur, California."
"Authentically experience the wisdom of your body and your need
for compassionate connection"
Understanding the Impact of Trauma
A traumatic experience shocks our entire body. The way we think, learn, remember things, the way we think about ourselves, the way we think/feel about other people, and the way we make sense of the world are all deeply shaped and altered by traumatic experiences, which is why it is so important that trauma and the resulting emotions are dealt with and that a person of trauma is helped to release the experience. If trauma is not released, the powerful images, feelings, and sensations do not just ‘go away’; instead, they become deeply imprinted and are stored in the body’s cellular memory. The following illustration is a map of how emotions are stored in the body (Bodily maps of emotions by Lauri Nummenmaa, Enrico Glerean, Riitta Hari, and Jari K. Hietanen). The active memories of the trauma remain ‘locked’ in the system, causing blockages until a ‘trigger’ occurs. When a trigger allows the person to access the trauma, the real cause of the original trauma may not be recognized and is instead transferred to the Trigger. For example, if a therapist treats a client who is storing trauma in their body and acts as the trigger for releasing this trauma, the client may assign blame for the trauma to the therapist who has helped them access it.
A Unique Approach: From Neural Somatic Integration to Green Touch Bodywork My journey has given birth to what I humbly call "Green Touch Bodywork," a unique approach that evolved from my deep expertise in Green Touch Bodywork. Green Touch Bodywork is about gentle touch—a way of being with each other in the world that arises in conditions of safety and expressing feelings truthfully. It's about discovering safety in our bodies to connect and interact in loving, compassionate ways despite personal trauma and environmental challenges.
The Foundation of Green Touch Bodywork In Practice
Green Touch Bodywork embodies a gentle yet revolutionary approach to mind-body awareness. It seamlessly integrates bodywork with the latest insights from human neurobiology, with a special focus on the Social Engagement System, as elucidated by Dr. Steven W. Porges. Green Touch Bodywork transcends conventional bodywork methods by delving into the intricate neural networks that underlie trauma and emotional/physical distress. With Green Touch Bodywork, the body's response to this presence is relaxation of tension and release of defensive postures. Images, thoughts, and physical sensations may arise in the course of a session and after the session. The client is invited to share these with the practitioner. They are then treated as "clues" and neural points by the practitioner as he continues to provide neural touch and presence.
Restoring Nature's Processes
Peter Levine’s observations of animals in the wild, for example, have revealed that the body has a “natural” way of dealing with trauma that leaves the victim without lasting symptoms and dysfunctions. However, in humans, the “unnatural” conditions we live in and the cultural programming we have experienced have alienated us from our own natural restoring processes and self-regulating mechanisms. Green Touch Bodywork paves the way back to the restoring processes that nature has stored within our bodies. Once we have learned to access this inner wisdom, we are capable of self-regulation and self-restoring.
Unlocking the Body's Wisdom
Immediate results of Green Touch Bodywork include the release of stored trauma, postural changes, pain relief, increased flexibility, and enhanced interpersonal connections. It's a path to self-regulation and self-restoration. Embracing Gentle Touch and Safety In the world of Green Touch Bodywork, gentle touch is the key—a way of being with each other in the world that arises in conditions of safety and expressing feelings truthfully. It's about discovering safety in our bodies, allowing us to connect and interact in loving, compassionate ways despite personal trauma and environmental challenges.
